The Wiliwili Legacy Initiative is an interactive community science resource and living database for mapping planted wiliwili trees in Hawaiʻi’s urban landscape. Created through a partnership between the Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative and Waikōloa Elementary and Middle School computer science students, it combines a public web map, dashboard, and stewardship information to support wiliwili conservation. The resource also teaches users how to germinate, plant, monitor, and care for wiliwili trees while contributing data for research and restoration.
Wiliwili Mapping & Citizen Science Investigation
Students or community members locate, plant, and register wiliwili trees in a public web map and dashboard, then track growth, health, and distribution over time. The resource can also be used for lessons on seed germination, planting methods, dry forest restoration, and how community-collected data supports conservation.
