This science enrichment packet provides a set of place-based investigations focused on mālama ʻāina, the water cycle, seasonal changes, kōlea birds, bird nests, animal traits, and backyard science. Students choose one activity each day and use kilo (observation), nīnau (questioning), wānana (prediction), drawing, modeling, engineering, and reflection to investigate their immediate environment.

A major part of the packet connects scientific concepts with Hawaiʻi-specific knowledge. Students investigate Ka Wai a Kāne and the water cycle, study the seasonal migration and changing plumage of kōlea, consider ways to mālama an overgrown ʻāina, observe backyard lizards and birds, and design and test a bird nest using natural materials.

Students choose among activities such as:

  • Watching changes in an overgrown ʻāina and deciding which plants could help improve it.
  • Studying Ka Wai a Kāne, the water cycle through photographs, videos, diagrams, and outdoor observation.
  • Identifying evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and water collection.
  • Looking for evidence of the water cycle in their own backyard.
  • Studying kōlea hatchlings, juveniles, and adults.
  • Learning about kōlea migration between Hawaiʻi and Alaska.
  • Predicting seasonal changes in kōlea plumage.
  • Examining backyard bird nests and comparing their construction.
  • Designing, building, testing, modifying, and retesting a bird nest made only from natural materials.
