This science enrichment packet provides a set of place-based investigations centered on plant roots, habitats, invasive species, seasonal changes in Hawaiʻi, weather, light and shadows, and backyard birds. Students are instructed to choose one activity each day and use kilo (observation), drawing, comparison, prediction, research, and explanation to investigate the environment around their home.
The packet combines general science concepts with Hawaiʻi-specific environmental learning. Activities examine Hoʻoilo and Kauwela, the invasive autograph tree, effects of invasive plants on ʻōhiʻa lehua, local habitats, and observations of birds and plants in students' own yards.
