This page introduces free, place-based school and community visits focused on climate change, climate science, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship in Hawaiʻi. Healthy Climate Communities brings activities to participating schools or community locations and recommends combining a school visit with a field trip to Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. Activities can be adapted to students’ learning goals and abilities and align with core-content standards, HĀ: BREATH, and ʻĀina Aloha Competencies.
School-Based Climate Science and Stewardship Workshop
Healthy Climate Communities educators visit a school or community location to lead interactive, Hawaiʻi-based climate and ecosystem activities. Depending on the group, students may investigate native plants and birds, climate solutions, ecosystems, Earth systems, plant propagation, restoration, or community resilience. Longer project-based partnerships may continue throughout the school year.
Sample activities include planting native seedlings, removing invasive species, collecting and dispersing seeds, observing endangered waterbirds, drawing plants and birds, making plant cordage, and learning about hale construction and traditional lashing.
