This page introduces free field trips to Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary and related school or community visits. Programs use Hawaiʻi-based, place-based learning to teach climate change, climate science, climate resilience, native ecosystems, and environmental stewardship. The field trips are designed for all ages and are recommended in combination with a school visit.
There are also longer project-based learning opportunities and internships involving native plant and bird studies, ecosystem restoration, plant propagation, environmental outreach, and conservation of Hawaiʻi’s cultural and natural resources.
Hāmākua Marsh Climate and Ecosystem Field Trip
Learners visit Hāmākua Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary to explore its wetland ecosystem and the native forest restoration work on Puʻu O Ehu. Depending on the program, participants may study native plants and birds, investigate Earth systems, restore habitat, propagate plants, and examine how local communities can respond to climate-related challenges.
